December Solar Generation and Export Numbers

Here is the overview for December 2024. Agile Octopus pricing was high in December, on some days it was close to its cap of £1 kWh. On the 11th we had slots costing 88.620p, 94.773p, 88.620, 83.380p, 81.459p. Of course the batteries save us from these prices. I have added the rates at the bottom of this page. Rates recovered near the end of the month. We had multiple days where the daily cost was over £6. We also had a few days of less than £1, and one day of 8p. We also had an Octopus Saving Session  on the 11th that earned us 1,032 Octopoints, £1.29.

Saying all that, our average Agile Octopus cost was 12.90p per kWh, that is 4p less than November.

The heat pump is working well. Hot water is heated at 5am and 4pm. Now it is colder, we set the heating to 21c from 3am to 9pm. Comparing costs from 2023 with gas and 2024 with the heat pump, it looks like this. This is cost comparison only. This does not include tariff changes or working out how much gas we would have used.

Heat Pump v Gas

Month Difference Gas (2023) Electricity (2023) Gas (2024) Electricity (2024)
December +£2.02 £68.08 £63.64 £9.49 £124.25

You can see the heat pump numbers here.

The worst generation day was the 1st with only 0.60 kWh. The best was the 6th when 4.10 kWh was generated.

The best export day was the 21st with 6.00 kWh. This was a force discharge from the battery. The best solar export day was the 13th with 0.30 kWh.

As solar panels output declines over the years I have added the 2023 generation to the table at the bottom. Of course weather comes into it as well, but I thought it would be interesting to track.

This year we have had 107 days where we generated more solar than we consumed, and 163 days more solar was generated than we imported from the grid.

Octopus Agile

The costs shown here do include the standing charge. Any comparisons are compared to the unit cost if we were not on Octopus Agile, which is 0.2521per kWh. This is the new unit cost after the price cap took affect. The standing charge was 0.4211p

As mentioned above we are still using overnight slots due to my new export strategy. The average slot price was quite high this month.
